Although the term is often used in reference to the South Asian monsoon, it applies to other regions where a similar cycle governs climate, including parts of West Africa, the Sahel, northern Australia, the Mexican and southwestern United States regions affected by the North American monsoon, and portions of Southeast Asia.

The phenomenon arises from the differential heating of land and sea and interactions among large-scale atmospheric circulations, convection, and sea-surface temperatures, leading to a seasonal shift in rainfall. Monsoon-influenced climates often show strong rainfall seasonality, with peak precipitation during a defined wet season and markedly drier periods outside it.
