Monsoon-influenced describes weather, climate, and ecological systems whose annual patterns are predominantly governed by monsoon circulations. It implies a significant seasonal reversal of winds and a distinct wet season with substantial rainfall followed by a relatively dry season, with rainfall concentrated in months corresponding to the summer monsoon.

Although the term is often used in reference to the South Asian monsoon, it applies to other regions where a similar cycle governs climate, including parts of West Africa, the Sahel, northern Australia, the Mexican and southwestern United States regions affected by the North American monsoon, and portions of Southeast Asia.

The phenomenon arises from the differential heating of land and sea and interactions among large-scale atmospheric circulations, convection, and sea-surface temperatures, leading to a seasonal shift in rainfall. Monsoon-influenced climates often show strong rainfall seasonality, with peak precipitation during a defined wet season and markedly drier periods outside it.

Implications include heavy dependence of agriculture and water resources on a predictable wet season, as well as vulnerability to variability in monsoon onset, withdrawal, and intensity. Socioeconomic planning, hydrology, and infrastructure must accommodate both abundant rainfall and periods of drought, floods, and related hazards. Climate variability, including ENSO phases, and long-term climate change influence the timing, duration, and intensity of the monsoon-influenced regime, altering crop calendars, reservoir management, and disaster risk.
