monokulare

Monokulare is a term used in several languages to refer to a monocular optical instrument, or more generally to something designed for viewing with one eye. In practical use, a monocular is a compact, handheld telescope with a single eyepiece that provides magnified views of distant objects. It is lighter and smaller than binoculars but typically offers a narrower field of view and less comfortable viewing for extended use.

Design and variants: Most monoculars are hand-held devices with magnification commonly in the range of 6x to 12x. Objective lenses typically measure 20–50 mm in diameter. Some models include zoom capability, image-stabilization, or prisms that produce an upright image. Focusing is usually achieved with a ring near the eyepiece or a central focus knob. Lens coatings reduce reflections and improve light transmission. Longer eye relief and larger exit pupils improve comfort, particularly for eyeglass wearers.

Usage and advantages: Monokulare are widely used in birdwatching, hiking, travel, sports events, marine observation, and scouting where portability and simplicity matter. They are often less expensive and more rugged than comparable binoculars, though glare and reduced stereo depth are trade-offs.

Terminology: In German and Italian contexts, monokulare describes the instrument designed for single-eye viewing. The term should not be confused with monocular vision, a medical term describing vision in one eye.
