Binoculars are a portable optical instrument consisting of two aligned telescopes mounted side by side, designed for viewing distant objects with both eyes. By sharing the visual input between eyes, binoculars provide improved depth perception and a steadier, more natural view than a single monocular.

Most binoculars use a pair of prisms to invert and erect the image and to shorten the optical path. The two common prism designs are Porro and roof prisms. The front lenses, or objective lenses, gather light and determine the instrument’s light-gathering ability, while the rear lenses, or eyepieces, deliver the image to the viewer. Specifications typically include magnification (for example 8x or 10x) and the objective lens diameter in millimeters (for example 42 mm), written as 8x42. Higher magnification narrows the field of view and amplifies hand shake, so many outdoor models balance power with stability. The exit pupil size, calculated from magnification and objective diameter, indicates brightness in low light. Additional features may include lens coatings to reduce reflections, waterproofing, fog resistance, and a built-in center focus wheel with a separate diopter adjustment for individual eye focus.

Commonly used for birdwatching, hiking, sports, and marine activities, binoculars range from compact models for travel to large, stabilized designs for astronomy or observing distant landscape features. They may include IPD (interpupillary distance) adjustment to align with the user’s eyes, and some heavier units are used with tripods or mounts for prolonged viewing.

Maintenance is generally simple: keep lenses clean with proper tissue, store in a dry place, and avoid touching coated surfaces. Do not look directly at the sun through binoculars, which can cause serious eye damage.
