Modelldesign is the process of planning, specifying and organizing the structure and behavior of models used to analyze, simulate, or guide the development of systems, products, or processes. It encompasses selecting modeling goals, choosing appropriate notations, and defining the components, relationships and interfaces that constitute a model. Modelldesign sits at the intersection of systems engineering, software design, and data modeling, and it often forms part of model-based design approaches that treat models as primary artifacts.

Key activities include requirements elicitation for the model, determining the level of abstraction, partitioning into modules, selecting modeling languages or formalisms (such as UML, SysML, BPMN or domain-specific languages), and establishing validation criteria. The design phase is followed by iterative development, simulation, verification and refinement, with emphasis on traceability from requirements to model elements and from models to experiments or implementations.

Applications span engineering disciplines (aerospace, automotive, electrical systems), software engineering, business process modeling, data architecture, urban planning and healthcare. In model-based design, models enable early analysis of behavior, performance, and reliability, as well as automated code or system generation in some toolchains.

Common challenges include managing complexity, ensuring interoperability between tools, maintaining versioned models, and preventing model drift. Emerging trends include digital twins, multi-physics and AI-assisted modeling, and greater emphasis on standards and governance to improve reuse and collaboration.
