formalisms

Formalism is a general notion used in disciplines that rely on symbolic representation and rules for manipulating symbols. A formalism provides a framework for modeling, reasoning about, or computing aspects of a domain by defining a formal language—an alphabet and a set of well-formed expressions—together with rules for forming and transforming those expressions.

In many cases a formalism also specifies axioms or inference rules that allow the derivation of new statements, and, optionally, a semantics that assigns meaning to expressions. A formalism is primarily a toolkit or method, not a complete theory of the phenomena by itself.

Different formalisms may be used to describe the same phenomena, and a single domain may be explored with multiple formalisms. Some emphasize syntax and proof, others emphasize semantics and interpretation. The choice of formalism shapes what is easy to express and what counts as a valid argument, and it can influence both the questions asked and the methods used to answer them.

Examples appear across fields: in logic and mathematics, Hilbert-style systems, natural deduction, and lambda calculus; in computer science, automata theory, formal languages, type systems, and formal semantics; in physics, the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms; in linguistics, formal grammars; in philosophy, formal theories of probability and decision making.

Strengths include precision, rigor, and suitability for automation. Limitations involve abstraction from intuitive content, sensitivity to assumptions, and dependence on the chosen formalism. Cross-disciplinary use and the interchange of formalisms can yield new methods and insights.
