In a linear system, the total response can often be decomposed into a sum of mode components, each associated with a specific mode shape and a time-dependent amplitude.

In mathematical terms, for a linear vibrating system described by equations such as M x'' + C x' + K x = F, the response x(t) can be expressed as a sum of mode shapes φ_i multiplied by their modal coordinates q_i(t): x(t) = sum_i φ_i q_i(t). The modekomponent corresponding to mode i is the product φ_i q_i(t). This decomposition relies on the system being linear and, often, on the mass and stiffness matrices allowing an orthogonalization that simplifies the extraction of individual mode contributions.
