Misfoldes refers to a category of protein misfolding diseases, a group of disorders caused by the abnormal folding of proteins, leading to their aggregation and accumulation in tissues. These misfolded proteins disrupt normal cellular functions, contributing to the pathology of various neurodegenerative conditions and other systemic diseases.

Protein misfolding occurs when proteins fail to adopt their native three-dimensional structure, often due to genetic mutations, environmental stressors, or aging. The misfolded proteins can aggregate into insoluble fibrils or plaques, which accumulate in specific regions of the brain or other organs.
