Migratòries is a term used in biology to describe the seasonal movement of organisms between habitats in response to environmental changes. The phenomenon is most commonly applied to animals and reflects predictable shifts driven by factors such as food availability, breeding requirements, and climate cues. The word derives from Latin migratorius and appears in several Romance-language scientific literatures.

Migration patterns vary widely. They can be long-distance or short-distance, complete or partial, obligate or facultative, and latitudinal or altitudinal. Triggers include photoperiod, temperature, rainfall, and pulses of resources. Some species undertake regular, calendar-driven migrations, while others move in response to local conditions.

Migratory routes often form defined corridors or flyways, such as major avian flyways across continents, marine currents used by whales, and riverine routes followed by eels and salmon. Animals navigate using a suite of cues, including the position of the sun and stars, the Earth's magnetic field, odors, landmarks, and learned information from experience or conspecifics.

Ecological and evolutionary implications are substantial. Migration influences gene flow, population dynamics, and ecological interactions. Timing mismatches with environmental change can reduce breeding success and survival for some populations.

Conservation considerations are important because migratory species face habitat fragmentation, barriers to movement, and climate shifts that alter timing and routes. Effective protection often requires international cooperation, cross-border planning, protected areas along migratory corridors, and the use of tracking technologies such as tagging and satellite or archival devices.
