Executive functions such as impulse control and working memory continue to mature, contributing to self-regulation challenges for some youths. Identity formation becomes pronounced, as peers, family, culture, and media shape values, interests, and personal style. Socially, peer groups gain prominence, and online platforms can play a distinct role in communication, self-presentation, and risk exposure. Mental health concerns such as anxiety, depressive symptoms, or stress related to school transitions can emerge during midteenhood; supportive relationships, stable routines, and access to counseling are protective factors.

This phase also varies across cultures and socioeconomic contexts, with differing expectations for independence, education, and gender roles.
