In psychology, Substage refers to the subdivisions within Piaget's sensorimotor stage, which spans birth to about two years of age. The six substages describe the progression of infant cognition and interaction with the world: Substage 1 corresponds to basic reflexes; Substage 2 to primary circular reactions; Substage 3 to secondary circular reactions; Substage 4 to the coordination of secondary schemes; Substage 5 to tertiary circular reactions; and Substage 6 to the beginnings of representational thought.
