Microinsects is an informal term used to describe extremely small insects, typically measuring only a few millimeters or less in length. It does not denote a single taxonomic group, but rather a size-based category that encompasses a wide range of orders and families. Their diminutive size often requires magnification and specialized techniques for study and identification.

Size and examples vary widely. Among the smallest are fairyflies (Mymaridae) in the Hymenoptera, with some species barely exceeding 0.2 millimeters. Tiny beetles in the family Ptiliidae can range around 0.4 to 1.0 millimeter, while many thrips (Thysanoptera) are commonly about 1–2 millimeters long. Numerous parasitoid wasps and other minute insects occupy similar size classes, making microinsects a diverse and widespread component of ecosystems.

Habitat and life histories are diverse. Microinsects occupy soils, leaf litter, bark crevices, plant tissues, and even stored products. Their life strategies include predation, detritivory, herbivory, and parasitoid activity, with many species playing important roles in biological control and pollination. Because of their small size, their populations can be highly localized and seasonal, and some have very rapid generation times.

Study and collection methods require specialized tools. Researchers use fine nets, soil and leaf litter sampling, Berlese or Tullgren funnels, suction samplers, and various traps to enrich microinsect remains. Identification relies on microscopy and often molecular methods such as DNA barcoding, reflecting both the scale and complexity of studying these tiny animals.

Ecological and practical significance varies by group. Microinsects can influence plant health and crop yields, contribute to nutrient cycling, and serve as indicators of environmental change. Their small size, however, means they are frequently overlooked in biodiversity assessments.
