Microidentifiers are identifiers embedded at micro-scale levels—typically in the micrometer or nanometer range—intended to provide unique, verifiable identity for objects, materials, or components. They are designed to be difficult to clone and to survive typical handling or environmental conditions, enabling provenance tracking and anti-counterfeiting in sensitive applications.

Methods for creating microidentifiers vary and may include micro-scale barcodes etched or printed on surfaces using high-resolution lithography or chemical deposition; nano-structured tags built into materials; physical unclonable function (PUF) based identifiers that rely on manufacturing randomness; DNA-based or chemical molecular tags used in biotech and pharmaceuticals; nano-particle markers and spectral signatures read by specialized scanners.

Applications for microidentifiers span several sectors. They are used for supply-chain authentication of electronics and luxury goods; pharmaceutical traceability; verification of art and archival items; tracking of aerospace and automotive components; validation of medical devices; and ensuring data integrity in manufacturing processes.

Challenges include readout reliability and speed; durability and environmental resistance; cost and scalability; privacy concerns; integration with existing production lines; and the lack of universal standards across industries, which can impede interoperability.

Status and outlook: the field is nascent, with ongoing research into reading technologies, durability, and scalable manufacturing methods. Some cross-industry initiatives propose frameworks for interoperability, but adoption remains selective pending further standardization and demonstrated value.
