They can be top-down, with explicitly defined fine-grained categories, or bottom-up, with data-driven clusters that become labeled categories. Implementation often combines manual annotation with automated methods such as clustering, semantic similarity, and natural language processing.

Applications include digital libraries and archives, e-commerce product taxonomies, content moderation and recommendations, search and filtering interfaces, and linguistic corpora annotation.

Advantages include improved search precision, refined filtering and personalization, and better interoperability of metadata across systems. Challenges include rapid growth of categories leading to label sparsity, increased cognitive load for users and annotators, maintenance overhead, fragmentation, and interoperability issues.
