Metsänväki, a Finnish term often translated as "forest folk" or "forest dwellers," refers to the supernatural beings and spirits believed to inhabit the forests in Finnish folklore. These entities are not a monolithic group but encompass a variety of beings, each with their own characteristics and roles within the forest ecosystem. Traditionally, they were seen as guardians of the woods, responsible for its welfare and the creatures within it.

The most prominent figure among the metsänväki is the Metsänpeitto, or "forest enchantment," often personified as the Metsänisäntä ("master of the forest") or Metsämömmö. This spirit is believed to have the power to confuse and disorient humans who venture too deep into their territory or disrespect the forest. Those lost in the Metsänpeitto may wander in circles, find familiar paths disappear, or be led astray by illusions. Releasing oneself from the Metsänpeitto often involved specific rituals or offerings.

Other beings associated with the metsänväki include various forest spirits, elves, and sometimes even animals with supernatural abilities. These spirits were often appeased through offerings and respect to ensure safe passage through the forest and to gain their favor for hunting or gathering. Disrespecting the forest or its inhabitants could lead to misfortune, such as getting lost, encountering wild animals, or finding hunting grounds barren. The concept of metsänväki reflects a deep-seated connection to nature and a belief in the inherent spiritual power of the natural world within Finnish culture.
