Historically, metallurgy emerged with early metalworking in the Bronze and Iron Ages and evolved through the Industrial Revolution into modern metal production. Advances in thermodynamics, phase diagrams, and materials characterization have deepened understanding of how composition, temperature, and processing influence microstructure and properties such as strength, hardness, ductility, wear resistance, and corrosion behavior. Metallurgy intersects with chemistry, physics, and mechanical engineering to predict and control material behavior.

In practice, metallurgists design and optimize alloys to meet specific performance criteria, choosing processing routes and performing quality control. Common materials include ferrous alloys (such as steel and cast iron) and non-ferrous alloys (aluminum, copper, nickel, titanium, and others). Applications span construction, transportation, energy, electronics, and consumer goods. Environmental and economic considerations drive recycling and sustainable practices, reduction of emissions, and the development of materials for batteries and renewable energy technologies.
