Mesoteliomassa is a rare and aggressive cancer that originates in the mesothelium, a thin membrane that lines internal organs and cavities. This lining is found in the chest cavity (pleura), abdominal cavity (peritoneum), and around the heart (pericardium). The most common form, pleural mesothelioma, affects the lining of the lungs. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining of the abdomen. Pericardial mesothelioma, affecting the lining of the heart, is the rarest.

The primary cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos fibers. When inhaled or ingested, these microscopic fibers can become lodged in the mesothelium, leading to inflammation and eventually cancerous changes. Other potential causes, though less common, include exposure to certain other mineral fibers like erionite and, in very rare cases, radiation therapy to the chest or abdomen.

Symptoms vary depending on the location of the tumor. Pleural mesothelioma can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, persistent cough, and unexplained weight loss. Peritoneal mesothelioma may present with abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, and changes in bowel habits. Diagnosis often involves imaging tests like CT scans and MRIs, followed by a biopsy to confirm the presence of mesothelioma cells.

Treatment options are limited due to the aggressive nature of the cancer and often depend on the stage and location of the tumor. They may include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Unfortunately, mesothelioma is often diagnosed at a late stage, making treatment challenging and prognosis generally poor. Research continues to explore new therapeutic strategies to improve outcomes for patients.
