A typical mentorship involves regular meetings, goal setting, progress review, knowledge transfer, and reflection. Boundaries and expectations should be clarified, including time commitment, confidentiality, and scope. Mentors share experience, model professional behavior, provide feedback, and help mentees identify opportunities; mentees take initiative, ask questions, and apply insights.

Models include one-to-one dyadic mentoring, group mentoring, peer mentoring, and reverse mentoring. They can be in person or virtual and may incorporate sponsorship elements or structured curricula. Settings range from corporate programs and universities to non-profit organizations and online communities.

Lifecycle stages often include initiation (goal alignment and relationship setup), cultivation (trust-building and skill development), and conclusion or transition (goal attainment, transition planning, or continuation in a different form). Some relationships evolve into long-term networks rather than a fixed end date.
