The practice is rooted in centuries-old Hungarian folk medicine and is believed to help alleviate various ailments, particularly those related to the musculoskeletal system.

The wooden spoon used in megmérje is known as a *meggyesfa* or cherry laurel spoon. It is carved from the root of the tree and has a distinctive, slightly curved shape. The spoon is heated over a flame or in hot water and then applied to the affected area of the body.
