megaplex

Megaplex refers to a cinema complex housing a large number of screens, typically 12 or more. Vendors often design megaplexes to offer a broad mix of films, showtimes, and formats in a single location, with spacious lobbies and extensive concessions. The term derives from “mega” meaning large and “plex” from multiplex.

The concept emerged in the late 20th century as film distributors pursued wide releases and exhibitors sought economies of scale. The megaplex model expanded in North America, Europe, and Asia during the 1990s and 2000s, with chains building facilities that exceed traditional multiplex sizes.

Modern megaplexes commonly include stadium seating in many auditoriums, digital projection, surround sound, multiple genres simultaneously, and amenities such as large food courts, VIP or reserved-seat options, and sometimes IMAX or other premium formats.

They enable broad programming, rapid turnover, and the ability to host premieres and events, but they can also centralize audiences, influence distribution toward blockbusters, and impact smaller theaters.

While most prevalent in large urban centers, megaplexes are found worldwide, often operated by major cinema chains and integrated into larger entertainment complexes.
