Megalophthalmia is a rare congenital condition characterized by an abnormally large eye. It is not a disease itself but rather a sign that can be associated with various underlying genetic or developmental disorders. The enlargement typically affects the anterior segment of the eye, leading to a prominent and bulging appearance.

The exact cause of megalophthalmia is not fully understood, but it is believed to result from a disturbance in ocular development during fetal growth. Genetic mutations affecting genes responsible for eye formation are often implicated. It can occur as an isolated finding or as part of a broader syndrome.

Individuals with megalophthalmia may experience various visual impairments. The enlarged cornea can lead to significant refractive errors such as myopia and astigmatism, reducing visual acuity. Increased intraocular pressure, leading to glaucoma, is also a common complication due to altered anterior chamber anatomy. This can further damage the optic nerve and result in vision loss if untreated. Photophobia, or sensitivity to light, may also be present.

Clinical examination and imaging techniques like ultrasound or anterior segment optical coherence tomography can help assess the extent of the enlargement and identify associated abnormalities. Genetic testing may be performed to investigate potential underlying syndromes.

Management of megalophthalmia focuses on addressing the associated complications. This may involve prescribing corrective lenses for refractive errors and close monitoring for and treatment of glaucoma, often with medication or surgical interventions to lower intraocular pressure. The visual prognosis depends on the severity of the megalophthalmia, the presence of complications, and the effectiveness of treatment.
