Medenceövvel, commonly translated as a pelvic belt, is a supportive device worn around the hips to stabilize the pelvic girdle. It is designed to compress and support the sacroiliac joints and surrounding structures, reducing unwanted movement during activity and providing proprioceptive feedback to the wearer.

Most pelvic belts are elastic bands with adjustable fasteners, such as Velcro, and may include a central pad or rigid elements that apply pressure to the sacrum and pelvis. They come in various widths and materials, including cotton, neoprene, or blends, and may include stays for added support. The belt is worn around the lower abdomen or hips, depending on the model, and is fastened to achieve a comfortable level of compression.

Indications for use include relief of pelvic girdle pain and support during pregnancy (pelvic girdle pain, PGP), sacroiliac joint dysfunction, and postnatal recovery. Athletes with sacroiliac joint instability may also use belts during activity.

Efficacy evidence varies. Some studies and reviews report modest reductions in pain and improved function for pregnant women with PGP or SI joint dysfunction, while others show minimal or no benefit. Pelvic belts are generally considered safe when used correctly, but improper tightening or prolonged use can cause skin irritation, restricted circulation, or discomfort.

Usage guidelines emphasize professional guidance, proper sizing, and avoiding over-tightening. Belts should be removed if they cause numbness, increased pain, or skin irritation, and hygiene should be maintained. Pelvic belts are often part of a broader approach that includes exercise therapy and physical rehabilitation.
