Mechanization, or mechanizace, is the process of using machinery to perform work that would otherwise require human or animal labor. It covers the selection, introduction, and operation of mechanical systems powered by human, animal, water, steam, electric, or internal-combustion energy, and it often changes the way work is organized.

Historically, mechanization began with simple tools and water or wind power, and accelerated during the Industrial Revolution with steam engines, power looms, and machine tools. In agriculture, mechanization spread in the 19th and 20th centuries through tractors, threshers, reapers, and combines, increasing yields and reducing labor requirements. In manufacturing, machine tools, conveyors, and automated lines increased productivity and consistency. In transportation and construction, powered equipment and heavy machinery extended capabilities.

The impacts of mechanization are mixed. It elevates productivity, expands production scales, improves product quality, and reduces physically demanding work. It also requires capital investment, maintenance, and reliable energy supply. Socially, mechanization can displace labor, accelerate urbanization, and demand higher skill levels for operation and upkeep. Environmental effects vary with energy sources and efficiency.

In contemporary contexts, mechanization often overlaps with automation and digitalization, as control systems, sensors, and robotics enable more autonomous operation. In policy and development contexts, mechanization remains a key lever for agricultural modernization, manufacturing competitiveness, and infrastructure development, while considerations include cost, training, and appropriate technology adoption.
