Mboonderwijs is the Dutch term for intermediate vocational education. It is a sector within the Dutch education system that prepares students for direct entry into the job market or for further study at a university of applied sciences. Mboonderwijs offers a wide range of programs across various fields, including technology, healthcare, business, and creative industries.

The system is structured into four levels, each with increasing complexity and requirements. Level 1, the preparatory vocational education program, provides a foundation for students who need extra support. Level 2 offers basic vocational training for entry-level positions. Level 3 focuses on specialized skills for independent work, and Level 4 provides advanced vocational training, often leading to supervisory or managerial roles, and is also a pathway to higher professional education.

Students can choose between two learning pathways: the vocational training (BBL) and the vocational-educational (BOL) path. The BBL pathway involves learning primarily on the job, with part-time study at an mbo institution. The BOL pathway is more school-based, with a significant portion of practical training and internships in a work environment.

Mboonderwijs institutions, known as ROCs (Regionale Opleidingscentra), are responsible for delivering these programs. They are funded by the government and are subject to quality control. The aim of mboonderwijs is to equip students with the practical skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their chosen profession and contribute to the Dutch economy.
