Materialrauschen, literally "material noise", refers to the random fluctuations in the physical properties of a material arising from microscopic processes such as thermal agitation, defect motion or electronic drift. The concept is important in condensed‑matter physics, materials science and sensor technology because it contributes a fundamental limit to the precision with which material parameters can be measured. In many systems the noise spectrum follows 1/f behaviour, but thermally driven processes often produce a Lorentzian spectrum that can be described by a characteristic correlation time.

Historically the term was introduced in the 1970s by physicists working on electrical conduction in disordered systems. It was later applied to mechanical vibrations in solids where stochastic stress fluctuations produce a background that can mask weak acoustic signals. In the field of magnetic resonance imaging, materialrauschen manifests as spatial inhomogeneities in the local magnetic field, limiting the achievable spatial resolution.

Theoretical treatments of materialrauschen often use the fluctuation–dissipation theorem, linking the power spectral density of the noise to the imaginary part of the material’s response function. Experimental characterisation typically involves lock‑in detection or noise spectroscopy, and the data are fitted to models that include both thermal (Johnson–Nyquist) and structural (defect‑mediated) contributions. Modern nanomaterials, such as graphene and thin metallic films, exhibit pronounced materialrauschen due to reduced dimensionality, which must be accounted for in device design.

Understanding and mitigating materialrauschen is essential for precision devices such as quartz crystal microbalances, micro‑electromechanical resonators and high‑performance magnetic sensors. Ongoing research focuses on engineering materials with lower intrinsic noise, for example through annealing, doping or using composite structures that screen fluctuation sources.
