Maszk is a term used in Hungarian and several other languages to denote a covering for the face worn for protection, disguise, performance, or decoration. In Hungarian, maszk is the common word for both everyday face coverings and decorative or ceremonial masks. The concept of masks is ancient, appearing in rituals, theater, and rites across many cultures long before modern health or fashion uses.

Types include protective masks such as surgical masks and respirators (for example N95/FFP2) designed to filter particles; reusable cloth masks; and masquerade or ceremonial masks crafted from materials like leather, wood, ceramic, metal, or plastic. In performance, masks transform identity; in daily life they protect or conceal, and in fashion they serve as stylistic accessories.

Historically, masks feature prominently in theater and ritual worldwide, from ancient Greek drama masks to Asian traditions such as Japanese Noh and Chinese opera, and European masquerade customs.
