Manklassifisering is a term used in Scandinavian contexts to describe the process of classifying humans according to particular attributes such as gender, age, or social role. The word combines roots from Norwegian and Danish for “man” or “human” and “classification.” In English-language sources the term is uncommon, and it is mainly found in demographic, sociological, or historical literature from Norway and Denmark.

Applications of manklassifisering include demographic analysis, labor-market studies, epidemiology, and other social sciences, where populations are grouped into categories to summarize patterns, compare groups, and guide policy decisions. Common methods involve collecting data through surveys or administrative records, defining a coding scheme (for example, age bands or gender categories), and applying statistical analyses to identify differences and trends. Contemporary practice tends to emphasize inclusivity, allowing non-binary or gender-diverse options and addressing ambiguities such as missing data.
