Mainchain is the primary blockchain in a multi-chain ecosystem, serving as the canonical ledger that records the network’s transaction history and state. It acts as the central reference point for the ecosystem and provides the core security and settlement layer upon which other chains, such as sidechains or child chains, rely.

In typical architectures, the mainchain maintains the global consensus, finality, and protocol rules that govern the network. It validates blocks, secures the overall system, and often controls the issuance and settlement of native tokens. The mainchain may also host governance mechanisms that determine protocol upgrades and policy decisions, and it can coordinate cross-chain communications by validating proofs or messages coming from offshoot chains.

Sidechains and other auxiliary chains operate in parallel to the mainchain, handling specialized workloads, privacy models, or scalability strategies. Assets and data can move between the mainchain and sidechains through bridges, pegging mechanisms, or two-way transfer systems. The mainchain’s role in cross-chain interactions is to verify and finalize state updates originating on or affecting other chains, ensuring coherence across the ecosystem.

Security and reliability considerations are central to the mainchain concept. Because the mainchain underpins the overall system, its consensus mechanism and fault tolerance are critical. Bridges and cross-chain components introduce potential risk vectors, so robust verification, auditing, and governance are common design priorities.

Notes: The term mainchain is used variably across ecosystems; some projects prefer terms like mainnet, hub, or primary chain. The underlying idea remains a single, authoritative chain that anchors a network of interconnected chains.
