The Mahukus are an indigenous community said to inhabit the Mahuka Archipelago, a cluster of islands with coastal lowlands, mangrove swamps, and adjoining highland rainforest. They live in a network of interrelated villages and maintain a system of customary law alongside formal administrative structures.

Etymology and identity. The name Mahuku is derived from a term in their language meaning “people of the forest.” It is used to denote the people, their language, and, in some contexts, their land.

Language. The Mahuku language is the community’s primary means of communication and features several dialects, including Coastal, Riverine, and Highlands variants. It is considered part of a broader Mahukaric language group and is taught in local schools alongside a national or regional lingua franca.

History and social structure. Archaeological and oral histories suggest stable habitation since the late first millennium, with robust trade networks linking coastal communities to inland settlements. Traditional governance centers on a council of elders, supported by elected local administrators and customary law, complemented by modern civil institutions.

Culture and economy. Subsistence farming—yams, taro, bananas—and fishing form the economic base, with timber and palm products also significant. Craft traditions include wood carving, weaving, and mat making. Cultural life centers on harvest and ancestor ceremonies, while tourism and handicrafts provide additional income in contemporary times.

Environment and contemporary issues. The Mahukus occupy a region of rich biodiversity, including mangroves, rainforests, and coral reefs. Pressures from logging, development, and climate change threaten ecosystems and language vitality, prompting conservation efforts and language preservation programs.
