Macrognathia is a medical term describing an abnormal enlargement of the jaw. It can affect either the upper jaw (maxilla) or the lower jaw (mandible), or both. When the mandible is enlarged, it is referred to as mandibular macrognathia, which is more common. This condition can result in a prominent chin and a misaligned bite, often leading to a class III malocclusion where the lower teeth overlap the upper teeth.

The causes of macrognathia are varied and can include genetic factors, hormonal imbalances, or developmental abnormalities. In some cases, it is an isolated finding, while in others it may be associated with specific syndromes like acromegaly, which is caused by excessive growth hormone production. Trauma to the jaw during childhood development can also contribute to its abnormal growth.

Symptoms of macrognathia can range from mild aesthetic concerns to more significant functional problems. These can include difficulty with chewing, speech impediments, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, and increased risk of dental issues such as wear and tear on teeth. The visual appearance of an excessively protruding jaw is often the most noticeable sign.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough clinical examination, including assessment of the facial profile and bite. Imaging studies such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs are crucial for evaluating the extent of jaw enlargement and planning treatment. Treatment options depend on the severity of the condition, the patient's age, and the underlying cause. They can range from orthodontic interventions to correct the bite to surgical procedures like jaw reduction osteotomies to reshape and reposition the enlarged jawbone.
