Machineindustrie, or the machinery industry, is the sector of the economy focused on designing, producing, and supplying machinery and equipment used across manufacturing, agriculture, construction, energy, and other industries. Firms range from small specialized suppliers to large multinational manufacturers. The industry covers a broad set of product families, including machine tools and metalworking equipment, automation and robotics systems, packaging and processing machinery, material-handling and conveying equipment, and components such as gears, hydraulics, pneumatics, motors, drives, and control systems. Many products are offered as standardized platforms or tailored to specific production lines.

The value chain typically spans research and development, product design and prototyping, sourcing of components, manufacturing and assembly, testing, installation, commissioning, and ongoing after-sales service and maintenance. Global supply chains link electronics, sensors, motors, and software with traditional machine-building capabilities.

Historically, the machineindustrie emerged during the Industrial Revolution through the growth of machine tools and power transmission. It evolved with electrification, then with programmable control, and is now increasingly digital. Today, Industry 4.0, IIoT, and additive manufacturing influence product design, monitoring, and customization, enabling smarter, more flexible manufacturing systems. Environmental considerations, energy efficiency, and circular economy principles shape product development and lifecycle management.
