Deadbolts provide a strong, separate bolt that resists forced entry, available in single- or double-cylinder configurations. Each mechanical type has typical applications, strengths, and vulnerabilities, and higher-security variants often feature more complex tolerances and keyways.

Electronic locks use electrical power to actuate a bolt and accept credentials such as PINs, RFID, smart cards, Bluetooth, or biometrics. They offer convenient access control, audit trails, and flexible administration, but depend on power and electronics and typically include a mechanical backup.

Specialized locks for safes, cabinets, and high-security applications include combination and time-delay safe locks, as well as master-keyed systems.
