Lämpömuovauksesi refers to the process of thermoforming in Finnish. Thermoforming is a manufacturing process where a plastic sheet is heated to a pliable forming temperature, stretched or pushed into or over a mold to take on the shape of the mold, and then cooled to a finished shape. It is a versatile technique used for a wide range of products, from packaging to automotive parts.

The process typically begins with a flat sheet of plastic, which is then heated evenly. Once the plastic reaches the correct temperature and becomes flexible, it is brought into contact with a mold. Various methods are used to force the softened plastic against the mold surface, such as vacuum, compressed air, or mechanical plug-assist. Vacuum forming is common, where a vacuum is applied to pull the plastic into the mold cavity.

After the plastic has conformed to the mold's shape, it is cooled, which solidifies it and locks it into its new form. The excess material is then trimmed away. Thermoforming can produce both simple and complex shapes, and it is often an economical choice for producing large quantities of parts, especially when compared to injection molding for certain applications. Common materials used include polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
