They achieve this by decreasing the muzzle blast, which is the rapid expansion of high-pressure gases exiting the firearm barrel when a shot is fired. The internal design of a lyddæmper typically involves a series of baffles or expansion chambers that slow down and cool these gases before they are expelled into the atmosphere. This gradual release of pressure significantly lowers the audible report of the gunshot.

The effectiveness of a lyddæmper is influenced by several factors, including its size, the number and design of its baffles, and the type of ammunition used. While they can substantially reduce noise, they do not completely eliminate it. The sound of the firearm's action, such as the cycling of the bolt or slide, will still be audible. Lyddæmpere are also designed to fit onto the muzzle of a firearm, usually by threading onto the barrel.

The use and legality of lyddæmpere vary widely by country and region. In some places, they are heavily regulated or prohibited due to their potential to conceal criminal activity. In others, they are permitted for sporting purposes, such as hunting or target shooting, where noise reduction can benefit both the shooter and the environment. Lyddæmpere can also contribute to reducing recoil, although this is a secondary effect of their primary function of noise suppression.
