Lumikoneita, meaning snow machines or snow cannons, are devices designed to create artificial snow. They are commonly used in ski resorts to supplement natural snowfall and ensure consistent snow cover for winter sports. The basic principle behind most lumikoneita involves atomizing water and mixing it with compressed air. This process creates very small water droplets that are then ejected into cold air. As these droplets fall, the cold air causes them to freeze into ice crystals, which form artificial snow.

There are two primary types of lumikoneita: fan guns and air-water lances. Fan guns are larger machines that use a powerful fan to propel the atomized water and air mixture over a wider area, often capable of producing large volumes of snow. Air-water lances, on the other hand, are typically mounted on poles and rely on the natural fall of gravity for dispersal, generally requiring colder temperatures for efficient operation.

The effectiveness of lumikoneita is highly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity. Lower temperatures and lower humidity allow for more efficient snow production, as water can freeze more readily. Modern snowmaking systems are also equipped with sophisticated control systems that monitor weather conditions and adjust water and air flow to optimize snow quality and quantity, as well as conserve energy and water. The water used is typically sourced from reservoirs, rivers, or municipal water supplies, and many resorts employ water recycling systems to minimize environmental impact.
