Luggage, also called baggage, refers to containers and bags used to carry personal belongings while traveling. It is typically constructed to protect contents and withstand handling during transit.

The term luggage is largely uncountable in standard English, as in “baggage and luggage,” but the form luggages appears in some contexts to refer to multiple pieces of luggage or in marketing; however, it is generally regarded as nonstandard.

Luggage types include suitcases (rigid or soft-shell), duffel bags, carry-on bags, checked luggage, backpacks, briefcases, garment bags, and trunks. Common features are wheels, a retractable telescoping handle, padding, compartments, and locking systems. Many modern suitcases use hard shells made of polycarbonate or ABS plastic, or lightweight fabrics like ballistic nylon and polyester; zippers and built-in locks, often TSA-approved, improve security. Some carry-on restrictions limit size and weight, varying by carrier.

Size categories typically differentiate carry-on (to be brought into the cabin) from checked luggage (sent to the hold). Typical weight limits for checked bags range from around 7 to 23 kilograms, while cabin limits are generally lower and depend on airline policy. Travelers choose luggage based on durability, weight, capacity, and ease of handling.

Care and maintenance include avoiding overpacking, protecting from moisture, cleaning wheels and zippers, and storing in a cool, dry place. Repair options involve replacing wheels or zippers; many manufacturers offer warranties.
