In addition to recreational activities, luftsport is also a competitive sport, with national and international competitions held throughout the year. These competitions often involve aerobatic routines, landing techniques, and navigation exercises.

Luftsport is a popular pastime in Germany, where over 35,000 members are registered with the Deutscher Luftsport-Verband (German Air Sports Association) in 2019. The organization also has members in other countries.
