Researchers measure perceived stress with scales such as the Perceived Stress Scale and the job-strain model, and may track physiological indicators such as cortisol. The concept informs interventions, including process redesign, resilience training, and enhanced social support.

Critics note that stress is subjective and sometimes beneficial for growth. Striving to be always low-stress can undermine accountability and challenge. Effective approaches balance strain and support rather than eliminate stress.
