The excessive attention and flattery can make the recipient feel special and cherished, leading them to overlook or downplay any negative aspects of the individual's behavior. This intense phase is often followed by a significant shift in the lovebomber's demeanor once they feel they have secured the target's emotional investment. The affection may suddenly disappear, be replaced by criticism, or the lovebomber may become controlling or demanding.

Lovebombing is often associated with narcissistic personality disorder and other abusive relationship dynamics. It is a form of emotional manipulation designed to isolate the target and make them more susceptible to the abuser's influence. Recognizing the pattern of excessive initial affection followed by devaluation is key to identifying and protecting oneself from lovebombing. Healthy relationships tend to develop more gradually, with affection and commitment building over time rather than being rapidly imposed.
