Log aggregation is the process of collecting logs from multiple sources and centralizing them for analysis, monitoring, and archival. It enables operators to search across systems, correlate events, detect anomalies, and support incident response and compliance.

Typical architecture includes log sources (servers, applications, network devices, cloud services), log forwarders or agents (Filebeat, Fluentd, Logstash), a central ingestion service, storage (time-series databases, object storage, or dedicated log stores), and an analysis layer (search, dashboards, alerting). Data flows from producers to collectors, where logs are parsed, normalized, and enriched, then indexed for fast querying and retained according to policy.

Logs may be structured (JSON, key-value), semi-structured (CSV, syslog), or unstructured text. Normalization aims to extract consistent fields such as timestamp, level, host, service, and message. Retention, access controls, and encryption govern data security and privacy.
