Locomotor is an adjective relating to locomotion—the movement of an organism or its parts from one place to another. The term is used in biology, anatomy, and medicine to describe systems, mechanisms, and behaviors involved in movement. In anatomy, the locomotor apparatus includes the skeleton and attached muscles that generate the forces for motion.

Locomotion in biology covers a wide range of modes, including walking and running on land, swimming through water, and flying in air. Animals show diverse locomotor strategies such as ambulatory movement for basic travel, cursorial limbs for fast running, saltatorial jumping, fossorial digging, and aquatic undulatory movement. Even at the cellular level, some organisms move by flagella, cilia, or amoeboid motion.

Neural control of locomotion relies on spinal circuits called central pattern generators that can produce rhythmic stepping patterns with limited or no sensory input. Higher brain regions, sensory feedback from joints and muscles, and vision shape and refine gait. Locomotion also has energetic costs that depend on gait, speed, body size, and substrate.

Development and evolution: Locomotion develops during embryogenesis and is subject to evolutionary change in limb structure and gait across vertebrates. Assessment of locomotion in humans and animals uses gait analysis, motion capture, and force measurement to evaluate parameters such as step length, cadence, and joint angles.

Clinical and engineering applications: Locomotor impairment can arise from injury or disease, such as spinal cord injury or Parkinson's disease. Treatments include rehabilitation, locomotor training, assistive devices, and powered exoskeletons or prostheses to restore mobility.
