A ljusschema is a plan used by lighting designers to specify the arrangement, timing and control of lighting for a production. It is used in theatre, film, television, concerts and other live events, as well as in architectural or interior lighting projects. The document helps communicate the lighting concept and ensures that the lighting team can execute the design consistently.

A ljusschema typically combines a lighting plot with an instrument list and technical notes. It includes each luminaire’s type, quantity, position or stage cue, instrument orientation, color or color temperature, gobos or other effects, beam angle or spread, and how the fixture is controlled (dimmer or fixed channel). It may also cover practical details such as mount points, power requirements, cable routes, dimmer or control channel assignments, and safety considerations. The plan is often accompanied by a separate cue sheet.

A cue sheet within a ljusschema describes the sequence of lighting moments. It lists cue numbers, brief descriptions of the action (e.g., fade up, color change, blackout), timing or tempo, and any transitions or movement of lights. It may specify the control protocol (DMX or other protocols) and reference to the lighting console channels used by operators. The document guides both the design intent and the operational workflow during rehearsals and performances.

Creation and use: The ljusschema is developed by the lighting designer in collaboration with directors and technical staff. It is refined during rehearsals and used during load-in, tech runs, and performances, serving as a primary reference for electricians, stage managers and operators.
