Ljevanje is the process of shaping metal by melting it and pouring into a mold, followed by solidification, to produce a shaped part or object. It is a foundational technique in metalworking and is used for both industrial components and decorative items. The term is used in several South Slavic languages and encompasses a range of casting technologies.

Throughout history, ljevanje developed from simple mold casting in ancient civilizations to modern industrial methods. Early molds were made from clay or stone, and later from sand or plaster. Today, common methods include sand casting, investment casting (lost-wax), die casting, shell molding, and gravity-assisted variants.

Materials used include ferrous and nonferrous metals and their alloys, such as cast iron, steel, aluminum, magnesium, bronze, brass, copper, and zinc alloys. The choice of method depends on geometry, required tolerances, production volume, and alloy properties. Typical applications range from engine blocks and piping fittings to jewelry, sculptures, and turbine blades.

The ljevanje process involves pattern or mold making, melting the metal in a furnace, pouring or injecting the molten metal into the mold, allowing it to cool and solidify, then removing the mold and performing finishing operations. Quality control focuses on porosity, misruns, cold shuts, and dimensional accuracy. Safety concerns include high temperatures, molten metal splashes, and fumes, necessitating protective equipment and proper ventilation.
