Liukuluvun (Finnish for floating-point number) refers to a common way of representing real numbers in computers. A liukuluku encodes a real value as a sign, a base, an exponent, and a mantissa, allowing a wide range of magnitudes with finite precision. In practice, numbers are stored in a fixed number of bits, using a normalized representation in which the leading part of the mantissa is nonzero.

The most widely used formats follow the IEEE 754 standard. In binary32 (single precision), a 32‑bit liukuluku consists of 1 sign bit, 8 exponent bits, and 23 fraction bits. In binary64 (double precision), it uses 1 sign, 11 exponent, and 52 fraction bits. The exponent is stored with a bias, enabling both very large and very small numbers. Subnormal numbers allow gradual underflow when the magnitude is too small to normalize.

Arithmetic with liukuluvut is subject to rounding. Common modes include rounding to nearest, ties to even, which minimizes bias over many operations. Due to finite precision, some real numbers cannot be represented exactly, and rounding errors can accumulate in computations. Historically, floating-point representation became standard in the late 20th century and is now used in scientific computing, graphics, and many software systems. Alternatives include fixed-point arithmetic and arbitrary-precision libraries for applications requiring exact decimal representations or very high precision. Understanding liukuluvun behavior—precision limits, rounding, and overflow risks—is essential for reliable numerical programming.
