Linoleumblocket is a relief printing block carved from linoleum, used in linocut printmaking to produce images by inking the raised surface and transferring it to paper, fabric, or other substrates. The technique emphasizes strong, simple lines and bold contrasts, with ink applied selectively to create layered or multicolor prints.

Typically made from a sheet of linoleum with fiber backing, linoleum blocks consist of natural linseed oil, cork dust, wood flour, pine rosin, and pigments, pressed into a stable sheet. Blocks commonly range from 2 to 6 millimeters in thickness, though thinner or thicker forms exist for different effects.

Linoleumblock printing emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a cheap alternative to wood engraving. It gained prominence in European and American printmaking, with artists using it for expressive lines and bold, accessible imagery. It remains widely taught in schools and used by contemporary artists.

Carving removes areas of the surface to create the image; the remaining raised areas hold ink. Ink is rolled onto the block with a brayer, then paper is pressed onto the surface to pick up the image. Reduction printing, where successive colors are applied by carving away portions of the block, is a common multicolor approach. Inks can be water-based or oil-based.

Care and storage: clean the block after printing and dry it to prevent warping; store flat or slightly pinned to prevent curling; avoid extreme heat. For archival use, protect the surface from scratches and direct sunlight to minimize wear and color fading.
