A lineworker, or lineman, is a tradesperson who installs, maintains, and repairs electrical power transmission and distribution lines and equipment, and may also work on telecommunications lines. Most linework occurs on overhead distribution lines or underground feeders, and workers use climbing gear or bucket trucks to access poles, transformers, and other assets.

Typical duties include inspecting lines and equipment for damage, locating faults, replacing poles, transformers, switches, and conductors, stringing new cable, installing protective devices, and performing switching or de-energization to restore service after outages. Lineworkers coordinate with system operators and, in emergencies, respond to storms to reestablish power and communications.

Training is usually through multi-year apprenticeships that combine on-the-job learning with classroom instruction. Programs are often affiliated with trade unions and utilities and take about three to four years to complete. Apprentices learn climbing, rigging, electrical theory, cable installation, and safety practices. Certification or licensing requirements vary by region and may include fall protection and live-line tools training.

Safety is a central concern due to hazards such as electrocution, falls, and traffic exposure. Employers apply standards from OSHA and electrical safety bodies, enforce lockout/tagout procedures, and require PPE, training in first aid/CPR, and procedures for working with high-voltage equipment and during adverse weather.

Job prospects are tied to the reliability of electrical and communications networks. Lineworkers are employed by utilities, contractor crews, or cooperatives. Advancement can lead to lead lineman, crew supervisor, safety officer, or project foreman roles. The occupation requires physical fitness, attention to detail, and strict adherence to safety protocols.
