Linómetszet is a printmaking technique that utilizes linoleum as the matrix. It is a form of relief printing, similar to woodcut, where the artist carves away unwanted areas of the linoleum block, leaving the desired image raised. Ink is then applied to the raised surface, and the block is pressed onto paper or fabric to create a print.

The material of linoleum offers distinct advantages and disadvantages compared to wood. Linoleum is a softer material than wood, making it easier to cut and carve. This accessibility allows for finer details and smoother lines than often achievable with woodcut, especially for artists who may not have extensive experience with carving. However, its softness also means that linoleum blocks can be more susceptible to damage and wear, particularly with repeated printing. The absence of a natural grain, unlike wood, also contributes to its unique printing characteristics, allowing for uniform ink application across the entire surface.

The process typically involves drawing the design directly onto the linoleum surface or transferring a design from paper. The artist then uses specialized linoleum cutters, often V-shaped or gouge tools, to remove the areas that will not be inked. Once the carving is complete, the block is inked using a roller (brayer). The ink adheres to the raised portions of the linoleum. Finally, paper or fabric is placed over the inked block, and pressure is applied, either by hand, a press, or a roller, to transfer the ink and create the final print. Linómetszet prints can vary widely in style, from bold, graphic images to more intricate and detailed compositions, depending on the artist's skill and intention.
