Many electronic devices, such as computers, smartphones, and LED lights, are inherently likestrømsbaserte. They require a stable, unidirectional flow of electricity to function correctly. Power adapters and transformers are often used to convert AC power from the grid to the DC voltage required by these devices.

Historically, DC was the primary form of electrical distribution, championed by inventors like Thomas Edison. However, AC systems, developed by Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse, proved more efficient for long-distance transmission due to the ease with which AC voltage can be stepped up and down using transformers.

Despite the prevalence of AC in grid distribution, DC power is experiencing a resurgence in various applications. This includes renewable energy sources like solar panels, which generate DC power directly. Battery storage systems also operate on DC principles. Furthermore, advancements in DC transmission technology, such as high-voltage direct current (HVDC), are making DC more viable for efficient long-distance power transfer, particularly for connecting asynchronous grids or transmitting power from remote renewable energy sources. Within buildings, DC microgrids are also being explored to improve energy efficiency by reducing conversion losses.
