Westinghouse

Westinghouse refers to the American company founded by George Westinghouse in Pittsburgh in 1886. The Westinghouse Electric Corporation grew into a major manufacturer of electrical equipment and appliances, and a pioneer in the adoption of alternating current electricity. The company helped develop and popularize polyphase AC power and built the first large-scale hydroelectric systems, including projects at Niagara Falls, which demonstrated the viability of long-distance transmission.

Beyond electrical equipment, Westinghouse expanded into broadcasting and media through Westinghouse Broadcasting, commonly known as Group W, and owned a network of radio and television stations. The company also produced consumer appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, and other household products.

In the late 20th century, Westinghouse reorganized and divested several divisions. The nuclear power business that originated with Westinghouse Electric Company remained a separate entity, changing hands as ownership shifted to BNFL and later Toshiba, and continuing as Westinghouse Electric Company in the nuclear sector. The Westinghouse name lives on today primarily through the nuclear services company Westinghouse Electric Company and through licensing of the Westinghouse brand for various consumer products by independent manufacturers. The Westinghouse legacy lies in its role in the modernization of electrical power systems and its broad diversification into media, appliances, and energy services.
