There are three main types of liikennepaikkojen in Finland: asema (station), risteys (junction), and tukipiste (service point). An asema is a designated area where passengers can board or disembark from trains. It usually features platforms and waiting rooms. A risteys is an intersection between two or more railway lines, where trains need to stop or slow down before passing. A tukipiste is a designated location for trains to stop and take on resources, such as fuel or water.

Liikennepaikkojen are used across Finland's vast rail network, with many marked on the country's standard rail map. These locations serve various purposes, including facilitating maintenance and management of trains, ensuring the department of trains, allowing large amounts of freight or passenger trains at high speed, and from often can handle heavy weights. Trains must usually obtain a clear route before entering a liikennepaikkojen site, which is done through a two-way communication system between trains and rail traffic controllers (mainly located in Helsinki or on important junctions elsewhere).
